Getting a Real Date on a Savings Target

Saying "I want to save for a car" or "I need a wedding fund" is easy. Turning that into an actual number of months, with a real contribution amount attached to it, is the part most people skip — and it's the part that actually makes a goal achievable rather than just a wish. This calculator runs the month-by-month math so a target amount turns into a concrete date.

Steps to Project Your Timeline

  1. Set the target: Enter the total amount you're aiming for.
  2. Add what you already have: Include any current savings balance — leave it at 0 if starting fresh.
  3. Fix a monthly amount: Enter what you can realistically set aside every month.
  4. Add an expected return: Enter the annual return rate on wherever the money will sit (a savings account, a fund, an investment).
  5. Read the timeline: The result shows years, months, total contributed, and estimated growth from returns.

The Math Behind the Result

Under the hood, this is a month-by-month simulation, not a single formula plugged in once. Each month the calculator adds your contribution to the running balance, then applies one-twelfth of your annual return rate to the whole balance, and checks whether the total has crossed your goal yet. It repeats this until the balance clears the target, then reports exactly how many months that took. Running it month-by-month, rather than using a simplified average, captures compounding accurately — money added in month 3 earns returns for longer than money added in month 30.

Worked Example: PKR 1,000,000 Target

Take the calculator's own default case: a goal of PKR 1,000,000, starting from PKR 0, contributing PKR 10,000 every month, at an 8% annual return. Run through the simulation and the balance crosses PKR 1,000,000 at month 77 — that's 6 years and 5 months. Of the final balance, PKR 770,000 came directly from contributions, and roughly PKR 232,000 came from compounding growth on top of that. Change nothing except the contribution — bump it to PKR 15,000 a month — and the same PKR 1,000,000 goal is reached in under 4 years instead of over 6, which is the kind of trade-off this tool makes visible instantly rather than requiring a manual recalculation.

Where People Actually Use This

A common case is a home down payment — someone knows roughly what they need and wants to know if their current monthly saving rate gets them there in a reasonable window. Parents building an education fund for a child use it to check whether starting now versus starting in two years meaningfully changes the timeline. Couples saving toward a wedding date work backward from a fixed event date to figure out the required monthly amount instead of forward from an arbitrary contribution. And anyone building an emergency fund uses it to see exactly how much faster a modest increase in monthly saving gets them to a comfortable buffer.

Reading the Result Correctly

If the projected timeline feels too long, the fastest lever is usually the monthly contribution rather than the return rate — a return rate is often outside your control, but a contribution amount usually isn't, and because of compounding even a modest increase can shave meaningful time off a multi-year goal. Recalculate every few months as your actual savings balance and monthly capacity change; a projection made a year ago based on old numbers isn't the projection to trust today. If a goal projects out to more than 100 years at the entered rate, the calculator flags this directly rather than showing a misleading number — treat that as a signal to raise the monthly contribution.

What This Tool Doesn't Account For

The projected return rate is treated as constant every month, which real markets and even interest-bearing accounts rarely deliver exactly — actual returns fluctuate, so treat the output as a planning estimate rather than a guarantee. It also doesn't factor in taxes on investment gains, account fees, or inflation eroding the real value of the target amount over a long timeline; for goals several years out, it's worth padding the target slightly to account for rising prices.

Private by Design

Every number you enter — your goal, your current savings, your monthly contribution — stays inside your browser. Nothing is transmitted to a server or logged anywhere, so there's no account required and no financial detail leaves your device at any point during the calculation.

What return rate should I actually enter for a savings account versus an investment?

Use the actual rate your specific account or fund advertises; a standard savings account might be 3-6% depending on your bank, while a diversified investment fund could be higher but carries more risk and less certainty.

Does starting with some existing savings meaningfully speed up the timeline?

Yes — existing savings compound alongside new contributions from month one, so even a modest starting balance shortens the timeline more than the raw amount suggests, especially for longer-term goals.

Why does increasing my monthly contribution by a small amount cut months off the timeline?

Because each extra unit contributed also earns compounding returns for the remaining months — the effect compounds on itself, so small increases have an outsized impact the earlier they start.

Is this the same as a fixed deposit or recurring deposit calculator?

It's similar in principle but more flexible — this tool works for any goal-based savings pattern with a fixed monthly contribution and a compounding rate, not just a specific bank product.

What happens if I leave the current savings field at zero?

The projection simply starts the simulation from a zero balance, which is the correct setting for anyone starting a new goal from scratch.

Can I use this for a goal where I plan to increase contributions over time?

Not directly — the calculator assumes a fixed monthly amount throughout. For a stepped-up plan, recalculate periodically using your new contribution amount and the remaining goal balance as the updated target.
