Ushr is assessed separately from Zakat โ it applies to storable agricultural produce, at harvest, with its own rate.
Perishable produce that cannot be stored and is sold quickly should be entered as cash in Step 02 (Financial Wealth) instead โ its sale proceeds follow normal Zakat rules, not the fixed Ushr rate.

11 โ Understanding Zakat
What is Zakat?
Zakat is an obligatory annual payment on qualifying wealth that has reached a minimum threshold (Nisab) and been held for a full lunar year (Hawl). It is one of the five pillars of Islam and applies to categories of wealth defined by Islamic jurisprudence, including cash, gold, silver, and business assets.
What is Nisab?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a person must own before Zakat becomes obligatory. It is traditionally defined in terms of gold or silver value, and differs between Sunni and Jafri methodology.
What is Hawl?
Hawl is the lunar year that must pass while wealth remains at or above Nisab before Zakat becomes due on it.
Gold and Silver Assessment
Both Sunni and Jafri fiqh assess Zakat on gold and silver, but differ on scope โ Sunni fiqh generally includes jewelry, while Jafri fiqh limits this to gold and silver held in coin form used in transactions.
Business and Trade Wealth
Trade goods, inventory, and business cash intended for sale are assessed for Zakat based on their current market value, according to the selected methodology.
Agricultural Produce and Ushr
Ushr is a separate agricultural assessment applied to storable produce at harvest, distinct from standard Zakat on wealth โ the rate depends on how the land was irrigated.
Debts and Deductions
Some liabilities may be eligible for deduction from gross assets before assessing Zakat, though eligibility depends on the specific type of debt and the chosen methodology.
Sunni Methodology
In Sunni (Hanafi) fiqh, Zakat applies broadly to cash, gold, silver, and business assets at 2.5%, using a Nisab of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver.
Jafri Methodology
In Jafri (Shia) fiqh, Zakat applies to specific categories โ gold and silver coins, grains, and livestock โ with cash and savings instead purified through a separate Khums obligation of 20% on annual surplus.
What is a Zakat assessment calculator?
It is a tool that helps organize your wealth into the categories relevant to Zakat, checks them against the Nisab threshold, and calculates the amount due according to your selected methodology.
How do I calculate Zakat on cash and bank savings?
Enter your cash, bank, digital, and investment balances in the Financial Wealth step โ in Sunni fiqh this is compared against Nisab at 2.5%; in Jafri fiqh it is assessed through Khums instead.
How is gold included in a Zakat assessment?
Enter the weight, unit, purity, and your own current market price in the Gold & Silver step, and the tool calculates the estimated value for your selected methodology.
How is silver assessed for Zakat?
Silver is assessed the same way as gold โ by weight, purity, and current market price โ and often used as the more inclusive Nisab basis since its threshold is lower in value.
How is business inventory considered?
Business inventory, goods for sale, business cash, and eligible receivables are entered in the Business & Trade step and assessed at market value.
What is Nisab?
Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold โ commonly based on gold or silver value โ below which Zakat is not obligatory.
What is Hawl?
Hawl is the full lunar year your wealth must remain at or above Nisab before Zakat becomes due.
How are debts handled in Zakat calculations?
Certain immediate debts and eligible liabilities may be deducted from gross assets before assessing Zakat, depending on your methodology and circumstances.
How is agricultural produce assessed?
Enter your harvest quantity, value, and irrigation method in the Agriculture & Ushr step โ the applicable rate depends on whether the land was rain-fed or artificially irrigated.
What is Ushr?
Ushr is a Zakat-like obligation on agricultural produce, assessed separately from wealth Zakat, at harvest time.
Is Ushr the same as Zakat?
No โ Ushr and Zakat are calculated and displayed separately in this tool, since they apply to different categories of wealth with different rules.
What is the difference between Sunni and Jafri Zakat methodology?
Sunni fiqh applies Zakat broadly to cash, gold, silver, and business assets at 2.5%. Jafri fiqh applies Zakat only to specific categories โ gold/silver coins, grains, and livestock โ with cash purified through a separate Khums obligation instead.
